Varicella myocarditis producing congestive cardiomyopathy.

چکیده
Introduction Although cardiac involvement in varicella has been described at post-mortem in those dying from unrecognized myocarditis or from other varicella complications (Hackel, 1953; Tatter et al., 1964; Moore et al., 1969; Morales, Adelman and Fine, 1971), clinical evidence of heart involvement in this disease is extremely rare, and is usually only recognized when there are suggestive electrocardiographic changes or when cardiac failure supervenes (Vazifdar and Levine, 1952; de Medeiros Neto, de Almeida and Facchini, 1961). In patients who survive there are no reported long-term sequelae. In this report the authors describe the development of intractable cardiac failure and acute congestive cardiomyopathy in a 14-year-old boy who was initially treated in hospital for acute varicella. It is proposed that the cardiomyopathy resulted from severe varicella myocarditis.

Herpes-like virus particles in myocardium of patient progressing to congestive cardiomyopathy.
SUMMARY A patient presented with myocarditis shortly after contracting chicken-pox and particles with characteristics of the herpes group were found in the myocardial biopsy; subsequently, he progressed clinically and histologically to a cardiomyopathy of the dilated type. A production machinist presented in August 1978 at the age of 25 with a two week history of malaise and lethargy, breathles...
متن کاملFamilial dilated (congestive) cardiomyopathy. Occurrence in two brothers and an overview of the literature.
Two young White brothers had dilated (congestive) cardiomyopathy. The elder came to autopsy after a chronic course of congestive cardiac failure, the younger underwent repeated cardiac catheterization and transvenous right ventricular endomyocardial biopsy specimens demonstrated histopathological features in keeping with a diagnosis of idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. These brothers may have ...
متن کاملVaricella zoster myocarditis progressing to cardiomyopathy and cardiac transplantation.
The case of a 12 year old schoolgirl with heart failure due to varicella myocarditis is reported. Heart failure and cardiogenic shock were evident 21 days after the appearance of the rash, and cardiac transplantation was performed two weeks later. Myocarditis is a serious complication of varicella zoster infection and heart failure may be fulminant. Endomyocardial biopsy changes consistent with...
متن کاملReduced suppressor cell activity in congestive cardiomyopathy and in myocarditis.
We studied suppressor cell function in 10 patients who had congestive cardiomyopathy, 13 patients who had myocarditis and 98 healthy controls. Myocardial biopsy, coronary arteriography and left ventricular angiography were used to define and differentiate congestive cardiomyopathy and myocarditis. The suppressor component of the immune response was assessed by examining the in vitro responses o...
متن کاملImmunological results in myocardial diseases.
Immunological studies have shown new diagnostically important changes in alcoholic and viral myocarditis, as well as in congestive cardiomyopathy. Increased heart size correlated with the degree of congestive heart failure, as well as with negative immunofluorescence and an increased IgA concentration in the serum. These findings may serve as a diagnostic aid in patients with myocardial disease...
